Identity

Curated by Jérôme Carrié, the exhibition is built as a space to show artistic experimentation and the deconstruction of norms, a realm of fiction and self-narratives, a critical tool for resistance against systemic oppression—queerness, in its multitude of artistic expressions, unveils a vast spectrum of bodily representations that question both the intimate and the collective.

The main titling of the exhibition is a hand-drawn lettering, reminiscent of protest inscriptions often seen at demonstrations. This lettering, printed in neon colors, creates a bold statement and seems shouted by the list of artists featured behind them. In the background, a dynamic composition of iconic queer symbols with a subtle yet captivating detail : the exhibition title Queer Rising woven within the outlines of the illustrations. From unicorns, rainbows, and glitter to claws, shurikens, and (lesbian) battle axes, these symbols remind us of the dual nature of uprisings, fueled by love as well as rage.

The text typeface, a post-binary fork by Bye Bye Binary called BBB Herthey Futural, designed by Clara Sambot and Laure Giletti, adds an innovative and inclusive element to the visual identity. The pictures giving a preview of the exhibition are particularly worked in a saturated neon & gray duotone, adding eye-catching elements to the overall design.

Organised by CIAM UT2J and prepared by the undergraduate students of the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès, this exhibition is part of the 15th edition of the ‘Week-End de l'Art Contemporain de Toulouse’ and its metropolitan area. It is hosted by the PinkPong network and receives support from the ‘Mission égalité et de la lutte contre les discriminations de genre et le harcèlement sexuel’.
