identity
‘Îlot Pepinière’ is a urban planning project close to the centre of Lille (F) on an abandoned plant nursery site. We were commissioned by SPL Euralille to create a visual identity for all communications from the city council towards the residents.
The residents are mixed, (tenants or owners of varied sized flats, commercial and medical businesses, social housing and a communal house for disabled persons), giving this project a good challenge.
One of the values of this urban project is to maintain and nurture the green spaces on site. Echoing this, we dug up a vintage technic called cyanotype. This 19th Century imagery process was invented to capture photographic silhouettes of plants. Widening its original use, we captured a mix-match of local plants, mineral material and also architectural elements found on site. The logo is also a mixing of two worlds where the modernist and geometric ‘Aperçu’ font combines with the romantic and floral Velvetine ‘Victorianna’ font.
We were first asked to set up a ‘welcome kit’ for everybody. This kit is composed of an A to Z booklet; a series of cards with the cyanotyped elements to be treasure-hunted on site; a seeded card from which to grow new plants; a gardening spade and gloves. These items are wrapped in a special geo-textile bag designed to be used as a plant pot on which badges and magnets are pinned for branding purposes.
The 52 pages booklet tells the story of the site as well as the urban values intended for this new neighbourghood.
This ‘welcome kit’ was followed by many different communication mediums about the urban project. We worked on posters, flyers, outdoor signs and maps, all concerning future construction plans and activities on site. One artistic activity led to a participative photographic exhibition by Destin Sensible. We were please to produce its catalogue.
Anouk Boyer Mazal is a Brussels based photographer. We commissioned her to do our portfolio of pictures but also for an imaginative series where you can glimpse our favourite projects (the last photo on this page).
