The exhibition is about migrant life in European towns but the main focus is on Pernot's latest work about the Greek island of Lesbos in 2020 where thousands of migrants are gathered in terrible conditions. An blunt photograph of a child warming his feet by a bonfire was chosen for the communication design of this exhibition.

Something is happening
19.05 > 19.09.2021

This exhibition at the Jewish Museum of Belgium is a retrospective of French photographer Mathieu Pernot. The exhibition is about migrant life in European towns but the main focus is on Pernot's latest work about the Greek island of Lesbos in 2020 where thousands of migrants are gathered in terrible conditions. This exhibition portrays the unease of the privileged role of the photographer in such situations, and questions the public about the place of art on highly political subjects.

An emotive photograph of a child warming his feet by a bonfire was chosen for the communication design of this exhibition. The image, stark, emphasises the sadness of the scene and is left blank of information. A second poster with the same image, as a diptych, provides information on banners which cover, like palings, the young person. This erasure of the child image mirrors the invisibility of this topic from the public eye.
The signage of the exhibition, like the communication had to be strong and direct. Wood palings of different lengths are printed with the title and the work descriptions. The long texts are common diecut? sticking vinyl on the walls.
